A few years ago I was looking at a website about the early silent comedies and read an interview with Paul Merton. (I can’t remember what the website was). He described some of the first ever films, called, regrettably, ‘facials’. These would involve a close-up of somebody, projected onto a huge screen, and they would then pull a funny face.

So, for a few weeks, I carried a camera with me and got everybody I ran into to pull a funny face. The result was this film, which I have just re-posted on YouTube in better quality. There are all sorts of ‘names’ in there, some of whom you might recognize …

Most sessions go well. Most producers and most performers are lovely, talented, sensible people. But every now and then you get a difficult one.

In the ten years or so around the turn of the century, voice of Ferrero Rocher Jonathan Kydd probably recorded more v-os than anyone. Here’s his one-man film depicting a session that doesn’t go quite according to plan.

A difficult producer … But often it’s the performer that’s the problem. Here some poor copywriter gave William Shatner some direction. I bet he wishes he hadn’t.
